Support the After School Arts & Science Program at Wesleyan’s Reunion & Commencement Weekend with renowned jazz vocalist and Wesleyan alumnus Tierney Sutton ’86. Sutton was an undergrad at Wesleyan when she first discovered jazz music and decided to become a performer. Since then, she has graced the stages of many prestigious venues including Lincoln Center, Birdland, the Rainbow Room, and the Montreal Jazz Festival. Returning to where it all began, Sutton, joined by flutist Hubert Laws and guitarist Larry Koonse, will be performing at Crowell Concert Hall for this season’s benefit concert for Green Street’s After School Program.

NEAT Mentors Celebrate Valentine's Day

On Saturday, Feb. 12, the NEAT mentors and mentees celebrated Valentine's Day at the Community Service House. We played games, made cards for our friends and family, learned some Valentine's Day-related sign language (thanks, Sign Language House!), made crepes and decorated cookies. Happy Valentines' Day from NEAT mentoring!

NEAT Mentors and Mentees Enjoy Outdoor Fun

Who doesn't enjoy the great outdoors in autumn? Taking advantage of nice weather, the NEAT mentors and mentees paired up with Wesleyan's Outing Club to participate in fun outdoor activities and learn some new skills. We made quesadillas on a camp stove, "slug" wrestled (in sleeping bags), learned how to pitch a tent and tie knots, played hopscotch and jump rope, balanced on a slack line, enjoyed trail mix and made art with sidewalk chalk. Many thanks to Wesleyan Outing Club for helping out and for providing free t-shirts!

Sunday Salon Series Brings Wesleyan Professor to Discuss Prize-Winning Literature

Middletown, Conn, November 13, 2009—Since 1901, Nobel prizes have become the most prestigious international recognition of achievement. They are earned by a broadly international register of scientists, activists, and authors. Wesleyan Associate Professor of English Indira Karamcheti will read from the several works of recent Nobel Laureates, in addition to leading a discussion of the criteria for establishing Nobel's ideal of the "greatest benefit [to] mankind," as it relates to literature.

This informal lecture takes place on Sunday, November 22 from 2–4pm as part of the Sunday Salon Discussion Series, Green Street’s monthly discussion series for creative minds and curious individuals hosted by Wesleyan University Chemistry Professor David Beveridge. Each monthly salon includes plenty of opportunity for socializing as well as a reception with light refreshments.

Indira Karamcheti, Associate Professor of English and Women's Studies is an important new voice in the field of postcolonial literature. Her broad ranging interests in the geographies of marginality encompass Caribbean and African-American literatures. She received a BA, MA, and PhD from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

About Green Street Arts Center
Wesleyan University’s Green Street Arts Center, which opened in January 2005, is a vibrant center for arts education, serving residents of the neighborhood and the region. It is a project of Wesleyan University in collaboration with the City of Middletown and the North End Action Team (NEAT). North End's own Thoro Energy will be performing in Wesleyan's annual Jubilee.
This show is put on by the Student group Ujamaa every year to promote cultural awareness and show off the diverse talents of the performers.

The show is in the Center for the Arts' Crowell performance space from 8-10pm
